Astrovision
Astrovision is Bob Nettmann's
first aerial filming system designed in
1975. It was adapted for the Learjet
and is still in use today by Clay Lacy Aviation
in Van Nuys, CA. Astrovision features a periscope
capable of fixed focal-length lenses only.
The operator pans and tilts via joysticks on
a remote console. There are two components
to the system. The bottom port allows downward
looking shots and is used the majority of the
time. There is also a top port component for
upward looking shots such as a fighter jet's
POV of approaching a refueling aircraft. Astrovision
has been used for a number of spectacular aerial
sequences including "The Great Santini," "Capricorn
One," and "The Right Stuff."
